The 12th Kerala Environment Congress organized by Centre for Environment and Development in association with Energy Management Centre- Kerala, on the focal theme Urbanization and Environment- issues, challenges and potentials has concluded at Thiruvananthapuram on 3oth November, 2016.
The two day Congress was launched on 29th by lighting of lamp by the Guests of honor Dr. Kurian Baby, special secretary, LSGD; Prof. Ommen. V. Ommen, Chairman Kerala State Biodiversity Board and Er. G. Anil, Joint Director, EMC . Dr. Babu Ambat introduced the program. Prof. Ommen. V. Ommen released the Proceedings of the Congress. The delegates took an oath to protect the environment by conserving through wise use of the natural resources and by saving energy and water. Dr. Kurian Baby delivered the keynote address of the congress.. Prof. V.K Damodaran, Chairman of KEC 2016 welcomed the participants Dr. T. Sabu, Convenor KEC 2016 delivered the vote of thanks at the conclusion of the inaugural session.
The deliberations of the Congress were concentrated on 5 sub themes viz.
- Urban Energy and Transportation Planning
- Urban climate change and disaster management
- Urban Biodiversity and Agriculture
- Urban Health, Heritage and Tourism and
- Urban Planning and Governance
13 lead paper and 27 research papers on the above subthemes were presenters in Congress and about 250 delegates participated.
Shri Dharesan Unnithan, Director, Energy Management Centre, Kerala delivered the valedictory address and distributed the young scientist awards to Ms. Roopa Ashwath of Indian Institute of Science Bangalore for best paper presentation and to Ms. Gayathri S Lal of College of Veterinary and Animal Sciences, for best Poster presentation. Sri Joseph VT , Program Director CED presented the report. Prof. V K Damodaran presented the ten recommendations of the Congress for future action by the State Government and Urban Local Bodies and was approved by the participants. Dr. Babu Ambat delivered vote of thanks.
