13th Kerala Environment Congress (KEC 2017)

Centre for Environment and Development (CED) in association with Energy Management Centre (EMC) Kerala has organized the 13thKerala Environment Congress (KEC 2017) at EMC Seminar Hall, Sreekaryam, Thiruvananthapuram from 6th and 8th December 2017. The Congress was sponsored by the Kerala State Council for Science Technology and Environment (KSCSTE), Kerala State Biodiversity Board (KSBB) Agency for Non-conventional Energy and Rural Technologies (ANERT) and  GJ Nature Care and Energy. It was  also supported many other professional organizations such as  Indian Society for Remote Sensing (ISRS), Indian Society of Systems for Science and Engineering (ISSE). Indian Meteorological Society (IMS), India Society of Geomatics (ISG), Kerala State Remote Sensing & Environment Centre (KSREC),  etc.

The focal theme of the Congress was  “Science, Technology and Innovation for Environment and Development”. The major subthemes discussed under the main theme are: Water & Waste Water Management, Solid Waste Management, Energy Management, Agriculture and Food Security,  Health care facilities, Food and Nutrition, Transport, Habitat, Marine and Ocean Technology, Disaster Management,  Space Technology  for Development,  Geospatial Technology, Education and Information and Communication Technology

The major objective of the KEC is  to create a platform to bring together researchers, academicians, scientists and development thinkers for meaningful and result oriented discussions.123A1617

The three days Congress was inaugurated by Adv. Mathew T. Thomas, Honourable Minister for Water Resources, Govt. of Kerala. Dr. S C Joshi IFS (Retd.), Chairman Kerala State Biodiversity Board has released the proceedings of the Congress and  Dr. S. Unnikrishnan Nair, Project Director, VSSC, Thiruvananthapuram delivered the Keynote address on ‘Space Science and Technology for Development’. Dr. G M Nair, Advisor, Kerala BioTechnology Commission,Kerala State Council for Science, Technology & Environment Smt. Padma Mahanti, IFS, Director, Department of Environment and Climate Change and Shri Dharesan Unnithan, Director, Energy Management Centre. Kerala delivered special addresses in the inaugural session.

The technical session of the Congress  consisted of:

  • Two Special Addresses, one  by Dr. B. Ekbal Former Vice Chancellor, University of Kerala and Member Planning Board on the topic “Technological Advancements in Medical Science” and the other by  Dr. Rajan Gurukkal, Former Vice Chancellor, Mahatma Gandhi University, and Vice Chairman, Kerala State Higher Education Council on Scientists as Organic IntellectualsScientists as Organic Intellectuals.
  • Two Symposiums, one on Solid Waste Management and the other on Energy and Renewable Energy.
  • Twelve lead presentations by experts in various subthemes
  • Seven oral and 7 poster presentations for Young Scientist Award

The Valedictory Address of the Congress was delivered by  Adv. D K Murali, MLA, Vamanapuram Assembly Constituency. He also distributed the Young Scientist Awards to Mr. Kiran K R,  Research Scholar, Soil Science and Agricultural Chemistry, ICAR-IARI, New Delhi (Best Oral Presentation) and Mr. Kashyap V – Project Assistant, ETD division CSIR-NIIST,  Thiruvananthapuram (Best Poster Presentation).
