The Centre for Environment and Development is an autonomous research and development, training and consultancy organisation focussing in areas related to Environment and Development and is recognised as a Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (SIRO) by the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research of the Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of India. CED was also the Centre of Excellence on Solid Waste and Wastewater Management of Ministry of Urban Development, Government of India, Empaneled Agency for the Preparation of City Development Plan(CDP) for the ULBs and also Preparation of DPR for Water Supply, Sanitation and Drainage and the Training Institute of the MoUD for AMRUT and Smart Cities Mission. It is one of the National Key Resource Centre for Drinking Water and Sanitation of the Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation, Government of India and   also an empaneled agency of Indian Council for Forestry Research and Education (ICFRE), Ministry of Environment Forests and Climate Change, Government of India for projects related to Environment Management. It is also the Accredited Agency of Government of Kerala for Solid Waste Management and Participatory Resource Mapping. CED is an ISO 9001 – 2015 Certified Institution.CED has completed nearly 200 projects sponsored by various agencies during the last 31 years.

CED has its Head Quarters at Thiruvananthapuram and Eastern Regional Campus at Bhubaneswar, Regional Centre at Hyderabad and projects and programs in Kerala, Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Jammu Kashmir, Uttarakhand, Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh and Tamil Nadu. Established a Rural Resource Centre at Jagathsinghpur, Odisha, to provide thrust on development and dissemination of appropriate technologies suited to the local conditions. This Centre also provides Capacity Building and Training for Panchayat Raj functionaries from various states of India
