Particiaptory Training 4 Sustainable Waste Governance: South-South Knowledge 1. Transfer Program

The overarching objective of the proposed project is to transfer and adjust waste technologies and governance practices from Thiruvananthapuram (Kerala, India) to different sociocultural and political contexts in Nepal and Sri Lanka through the co-creation of knowledge, capacity building and local stakeholder involvement. To achieve this objective, the following activities are undertaken: Develop ‘Technology Baskets’: locally adjustable technology toolkits, with particular attention to biowaste, e-waste, bio-medical waste, plastic use in road construction, and the planning of material recovery facility (CED, EAWAG). Train trainers on Technology Baskets emphasizing their multiple institutional, financial, political and sociocultural prerequisites and implications (CED). Pilot and adjust selected technologies in the local contexts of Sri Lanka and Nepal (Jana, CIUD) Pilot a participatory decision-making process in one local authority (municipality) in Sri Lanka and Nepal (EAWAG, UNIL) Document the participatory decision-making process and assess its potential for scaling up to the national level (UNIL; EAWAG; CED; CIUD; Jana) The local adaptation and transfer of existing and succefully implemented waste technologies for decentralized waste management in Kerala will accelerate transformation of locally organized waste initiatives within the country contexts of Sri Lanka and Nepal. The technologies need to be adapted to the local physical, socio-cultural and political-institutional setting – including gender, caste, class, local climatic and geographical conditions, and disaster risk reduction measure with the focus on pandemics – and to seek local appropriatation, creation of confidence and professionalization through participatory decision-making as to lead to scaling up the bottom-up initiatives to the national level.
